Winter Time Change in Namibia

On Sunday, 3 April 2011, the Namibian time will change from UTC +2 to UTC +1. This change will occur at 02h00 (AM). For practical purposes, set clocks back 1 hour (ie. from 02h00 to 01h00).

The time will not change in the Caprivi, as this area is not subject to summer and winter time changes.

Midgard Country Estate is now part of Kempinski Namibia

Kempinski is proud to announce that our partner here in Namibia, Ohlthaver and List Group of companies has awarded us to also manage his property, Midgard Country Estate.

The first phases of integration of the Midgard Country Estate within Kempinski are already underway with synergies in various functions such as sales and marketing, human resources and finance. The official hand over of all operations is scheduled for July 2011. The project shall witness immediate influx of talents and resources to positively influence service standards and tangibly enhance the guest experience.

The initial operation of the property shall still run under the Estate trade name at this stage, the property can be marketed as "Midgard Country Estate managed by Kempinski". The Midgard Country Estate shall benefit from the international exposure, Kempinski global expertise and the association with a world class luxury hotel brand. The decision to integrate the Midgard Country Estate within the Kempinski portfolio was made with a long-term vision to establish a leisure division within the Ohlthaver and List Group incorporating all its hotels and lodges under one umbrella.

Midgard, part of the Ohlthaver and List Group of Companies, means "Empire of the People" and is deeply rooted in Germanic mythology. Karl Werner Rudolf List, grandfather of Sven Thieme, Executive Chairman of the Ohlthaver and List Group of Companies, acquired Midgard in 1937 and till this day the old farm house, built of clay bricks, has been preserved and was converted into a guest farm in 1993.

Midgard Country Estate is situated in the Otjihavera Mountains, and 1.5 hours drive from Windhoek and is a unique guest farm, which has kept its special character as a private country home and African farm. After renovations in 2009, the Estate now offers a choice of luxurious accommodation and different banquet venues.

The Estate boasts 46 air-conditioned rooms with en-suite bathrooms including 5 family rooms and 5 Suites with lounge and private balcony. Midgard offers the perfect setting for leisure travellers, meetings and incentive trips. Due to its location, it is the ideal first port of call to Namibia when on tour.

A change done to the Ultimate Namibia Safari

As a result of current closure and the uncertainty over the re-opening of Hobatere Lodge they have been obliged to replace the use of this lodge on the ULTIMATE NAMIBIA SAFARI, which is one of their guaranteed departure small group safaris.
They will now be taking guests to stay at the new Dolomite Camp in western Etosha National Park on Day 7 of this itinerary. Dolomite Camp will officially open in June, and will be the newest camp inside any National Park. We are certain that this change will not impact on the quality of the safari and, if anything, it should enhance it as it offers a stay inside the restricted western portion of the Etosha National Park. This change will not affect the price of the safari and the stay there will also include a night drive.

BüllsPort Guestfarm and Mountain Zebra research

BüllsPort Guestfarm in collaboration with Professor Morris Gosling of the Namibian Nature Foundation, conducts a very interesting Mountain Zebra research in the spectacular Naukluft Mountains. While studying the ecology and behaviour of this wild and ancient species, which is now protected in Namibia, the project aims to discover how many zebras live on the farm. A hidden camera is positioned in the Quiver tree gorge, capturing the movements of the Hartman’s Mountain Zebra. After a year of research a number of 115 individual animals were recorded. Like human fingerprints, all zebra stripe patterns are individually unique so that once an animal is photographed, it can be recognised again. Visitors to the region are asked if they take pictures of Mountain Zebras in the Naukluft Region, to kindly forward photographs and especially good quality side views of animals, with a record of date and location of sightings to Prof Gosling: l.m.gosling@ncl.ac.uk
This information serves to keep track of the movements of known animals and greatly supports the research project.

Re-opening of Hobatere Lodge is uncertain

We regret to inform you that the likelihood of Hobatere Lodge being able to continue in the future as before is not clear. They are doing all they can to ascertain Hobatere’s future in the tourism industry but it is less than clear at the present time to know what the future decision will be. You have our assurance that as soon as the authorities indicate their intentions in this regard all operators and loyal supporters will be informed immediately.
As their contract to manage and run the concession has not yet been renewed, we hope you will understand that it is impossible for them to guarantee any future reservations. We tender our sincere apologies for any inconvenience which their state of uncertainty may be causing, but tat the moment they cannot hold to their declared expectation of being able to re-open the lodge on 1 May 2011.
We will let you know as soon as we have any further clarity regarding the future of Hobatere and have this information relayed on to you.

Namibia shines...Country ranked 3rd top tourism destination by WEF

Namibia has been ranked third top tourism destination in sub-Saharan Africa by the 2011 Travel and Tourism Competitive Index, coming ahead of much-popularised exotic countries such as Kenya and Tanzania. Namibia follows South Africa at number two spot with Mauritius toping the list of 30 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Botswana ranks fifth in the regional listing. Namibia ranks 84 in the overall ranking of 139 countries worldwide. Switzerland is at number one in the world, while South Africa and Botswana rank 66 and 91 respectively. The “rich natural resources, fauna and a pristine natural environment” along with prioritised environment sustainability and “well developed ground transport infrastructure,” played in the favour of Namibia.
The World Economic Forum (WEF) released the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report on March 07 at the Global Tourism Forum 2011 in Andorra. Last year’s football world cup contributed to South Africa as a holiday destination as it “reinforced South Africa’s position as a key international tourist destination,” along with “reasonably priced hotel rooms and a favourable tax regime,” says the report. Yet, “safety and security remain serious concerns” and so is the level of health and hygiene with “low physician density and concerns about access to improved sanitation.
Namibia’s western neighbour, Botswana, which ranked fifth in the region scored high for its natural resources, with much nationally protected land area, rich fauna, and a lack of environmental damage. The country also benefits from excellent price competitiveness, with low-ticket taxes and airport charges, a favourable tax regime, and low prices more generally. “In addition, some aspects of the policy environment are supportive of the sector’s development, including well-protected property rights and few visa restrictions,” comments the report.
