Namibia flyafrica.com also announced the launch of Windhoek to Cape Town flights from 16 March 2015. Air Namibia: Schedule adjustments

Amendments have been made to the current schedule, and the system is being updated accordingly.

Notably adjustments are highlighted below:

·        Effective 5 December 2011 until 24^th March 2012, SW 164 departure time from 06:30 to 07:00, and ensuing flight times changed accordingly,

·        Effective 5 December 2011 until 24^th March 2012, one rotation ERS-NDU-MPA, on Thursdays removed,

Air Namibia upgrades regional fleet

Air Namibia has announced an upgrade of its regional fleet by adding two new-generation A319-100 aircraft, scheduled to enter service this month.

The A319-100 will be in a two-class configuration, with 16 business-class and 96 economy-class seats. The new aircraft offers a 137cm seat pitch in business class and 81cm pitch in economy class. The aircraft will service the Windhoek, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Luanda and Accra routes.

Walvis Bay – Johannesburg

New route effective 15 April 2011, 6 times per week on Embraer ERJ 135, convenient departure and arrival times. Clients should look forward to a flight per day except for Saturday; depart JNB at 09:00 arrive WVB at 10:25 and depart WVB at 16:20 arrive in JNB at 19:35

Walvis Bay – Cape Town

Increased frequency on Walvis Bay – Cape Town, from 3 flights per week to 6 flights per week. Existing flights operated on B737-500 and the 3 new rotations operated on ERJ 135. New departure times are: WVB-CPT depart 10:45, arrive 13:50 and CPT-WVB depart 14:40, arrive 15:45. These flights will be operated daily except for Saturdays. Additional frequencies start 15 April 2011.

Increased baggage allowance

On WDH-JNB, WDH-CPT and on WDH-LAD by 10 additional free allowance. Economy class passengers are now granted 32 kg and business class is now 42 kg. Applicable for departures effective 15 April 2011

Improved departure & arrival times

Departure and arrival times on the JNB-WDH, CPT-WDH and WDH-Luanda routes were adjusted to meet travellers’ needs offering better onward connections. Morning flights from JNB to WDH, as well as from CPT to WDH now depart at 07:00 and arrive in WDH at 08:00 (ALL TIMES are local at airport of departure or arrival). This schedule allows our clients a full business day in Windhoek due to earlier arrival times. Departure times from Windhoek to both Cape Town and Johannesburg are at 16:40 and 16:55 respectively, affording our esteemed customers early arrival at their destinations be it for home, or in time to catch onward connecting flights to various destinations.

Luanda – Increased Frequencies

Operating hours of the Windhoek - Luanda route have also been improved, departing from Windhoek at 09:30 arrive in Luanda at 12:00. The return flight leaves Luanda at 13:00 arriving in Windhoek at 15:25. We are pleased to announce further that our new and additional frequency to Luanda on Thursdays started on 30th March 2011, and that the new flight was well received and appreciated by the market. New fare structure and fare basis on the JNB-WDH route, highlight the key thereof.

Winter Time Change in Namibia

On Sunday, 3 April 2011, the Namibian time will change from UTC +2 to UTC +1. This change will occur at 02h00 (AM). For practical purposes, set clocks back 1 hour (ie. from 02h00 to 01h00).

The time will not change in the Caprivi, as this area is not subject to summer and winter time changes.

Sossusvlei has Water

Breaking news received from Sossusvlei Lodge.

The Pictures taken just after the water reached the Sossusvlei, the area known to have some of the worlds highest sand dunes.

The Namib Desert region around Sossusvlei after several years is blessed to have received some good rains. The Tsauchab River has been in flood a few times in the past few days and eventually the water masses made its way through to the end, to Sossusvlei.

Water in the desert is something not often witnessed. The Namib Desert is said to be one of the oldest and driest desert, having endured arid or semi-arid conditions for an estimated 55 to 80 million years. Animals and plants in the Namib rely largely on morning fog as the main source of water. This often referred to as 'mysterious' fog is as a result of the Arctic water meeting African desert; the Atlantic Ocean is a mere 60km east of Sossusvlei.

The ephemeral Tsauchab River, has its origin in the Naukluft Mountains, makes its way through the Sesriem Canyon and then after another 20-30km onwards forming a delta through the sandy stretches towards the Deadvlei and final dune belt of Sossusvlei. The sandy 5km stretch of road from what is known as the 2x4 Parking is flooded and this phenomenon is currently best viewed from the air.
All other roads from elsewhere in the country leading towards the Sossusvlei area seem relatively fine. They are however best travelled in 4x4, or vehicles with high ground clearance. Special care must be taken when approaching rivers and even the smallest rivulets as these may have steep edges due to sudden and have flow of water. Slow driving is definitely recommended.
