The Park Itself

Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It covers an area of 19,485 square kilometres in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga in northeastern South Africa, and extends 360 kilometres from north to south and 65 kilometres from east to west. The administrative headquarters are in Skukuza. Areas of the park were first protected by the government of the South African Republic in 1898, and it became South Africa's first national park in 1926.

To the west and south of the Kruger National Park are the two South African provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. In the north is Zimbabwe, and to the east is Mozambique. It is now part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a peace park that links Kruger National Park with the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe, and with the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique.

The park has nine main gates allowing entrance to the different camps.

Visitors can enjoy self-catering accommodation at the Skilpad Rest Camp or enjoy various camping options along the coast. The main entrance, reception, administrative offices and prime accommodation are all at Skilpad. During the flower season, in spring, they host a temporary luxury camp at the coast that is run by a private operator.

Part of the semi-desert Succulent Karoo biome, Namaqualand is home to the richest bulb flora of any arid region in the world and more than 1 000 of its estimated 3 500 plant species are found nowhere else on earth. When compared to regions with similar semi-arid environments, the richness of this biome is exceptional.

During early August and September, seemingly overnight, the dusty valleys of Namaqualand are transformed in to a wonderland, carpeted with wildflowers that draw visitors from around the country and from abroad.

New cycle route planned for the Western Cape

The first phase of the Cape Town to Southern Cape cycle route, known as Cross Cape, is set to be completed by March 2017.

 

The 160km track between George and Plett should be complete next year, said Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities.

“As part of this process, the signage, which complies with international standards, will be erected,” said Winde.

The route will include road track, mountain trails, jeep and forest tracks.

An audit of accommodation, existing cycle tracks and bike shops will be conducted, Winde added, and the route will be launched through an international event.

The development of the new route is being driven by the Western Cape Government, Wesgro, local municipalities and private sector stakeholders in the region.

“The increased economic activity the route will bring into our region will drive new economic opportunities for residents,” said Winde.
