Chitabe Camp

Chitabe Camp borders the Moremi Game Reserve and the area is a fascinating combination of open floodplains, wooded islands and perennial Delta – which hosts a wide variety of wildlife. Chitabe Camp has been operational since 1997 and has developed an outstanding reputation for loyal, dedicated staff and superb guiding. Chitabe is strictly a land based camp and renowned for its wild dog population.

Chitabe Camp has eight traditional but stylish “meru” style tented rooms. All rooms are built on raised wooden decks and linked by walkways to the main areas. The en suite bathrooms have additional outdoor showers and each room has a private viewing deck overlooking the floodplains. There are ceiling fans, mosquito nets and safes in each room.

Chitabe Camp is accessed by a wooden walkway which leads to the main lounge area. This is large and thatched, and beautifully designed. The cleverly designed bar, hewn from a single trunk of a sausage tree, is fully stocked with a wide variety of drinks.

The swimming pool has a good view over the plain in front of camp. Surrounded by sun loungers and naturally shaded by the enormous trees above, this is a great place to cool off in the heat of the day.

The dining room is a large thatched open-sided room, with views over the surrounding plains. Brunches and dinners are served here. A secluded hide in front of the camp offers guests a relaxing spot to view the wildlife. Chitabe also has a small curio shop selling traditional Okavango crafts and baskets made by the local staff.

Shumba Bush Camp

Shumba Bush Camp is one of the two Wilderness Safaris high end luxury Zambian camps. It is located in the Busunga Plains lying in the north of the Kafue National Park; a massive flat area which stretches far and wide and also happens to be one of Zambia's most significant wetland resources.

Shumba Camp comprises six spacious luxury safari tents on raised platforms with spectacular views of the surrounding plains. A large focus at the camp is to involve you in the safari way of life and many of the meals are prepared and cooked in front of you.

This camp is perfectly situated to take advantage of the plains game and predator concentrations of the Busanga Plains, being situated as it is within close proximity to permanent water and having easy access to a mix of seasonal and permanent floodplains.

Shumba is named after a favourite species in the area - prides of lion sometimes up to 20 strong! Viewing of species like puku, lechwe and hippo is possible for much of the day from the comfort of your tent or the main deck, while the camp's fig trees ensure both shade and constant bird activity in the canopy above.

In the heart of the Okavango Delta.

The word Pelo means ‘heart’ – a fitting name as, from the air, the island on which the camp is situated is heart shaped. It is also situated pretty much as deep into the heart of the Okavango Delta. The camp is completely eco-friendly with no permanent structures and is ideal for the adventurous traveller wanting that classic, traditional Delta experience.

The main area comprises a tented dining area and lounge situated under impressive wild date palms, jackalberry and Natal mahogany trees. There is also an outdoor boma area and a raised platform built on to an old ant hill.

five spacious guest tents have en-suite bathrooms and a covered front veranda. A zipper door separates the sleeping area from the bathroom which has a flush toilet, as well as running water in the basin. A door leads from the bathroom into an outdoor bucket shower.

Activities focus on mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe) excursions in the open, shallow floodplains as well as boating and walking. No game drives take place at Pelo; the emphasis being on getting away from vehicles and the hustle of the modern world; to really feel, smell and touch Africa.

Zimbabwe Known for its Natural Attractions

Zimbabwe is known for its rich tradition of stone sculpture and for its natural tourist attractions such as the Great Zimbabwe Falls and Victoria Falls.

Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second city, is a major commercial, industrial and tourist centre. The city is rich in historical associations and is the home of the National Museum. Nearby are the ancient Khami ruins, while to the south is the Rhodes Matopos National Park, notable for its exotic formations of huge granite boulders. Dams with excellent fishing, caves with rock paintings, Cecil Rhodes' grave and a well-stocked game park make this area popular with visitors.

Eastern Highlands

The string of mountains and the lush countryside in Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands, which form a natural border with neighbouring Mozambique, are particularly sought after by walkers and trekkers. The World's View offers a panoramic view across northern Zimbabwe. From here, a steep footpath leads to the road to Nyanga village with its English gardens, village common and church.

Freshwater fishing
Zimbabwe offers excellent freshwater fishing, the best locations being Lake Kariba (famous for its tigerfish), the Zambezi River above the Victoria Falls (known for its giant catfish), the streams of the Eastern Highlands and the many lakes.

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls, which form a natural border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, are one of Africa’s best-known natural wonders and one of the world’s most impressive waterfalls. The falls, which Livingstone named after Queen Victoria, were known to native Kololo tribes in the 18th century as Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning ‘the smoke that thunders’, and the spray that they generate can be seen for miles around. The cascade is formed as the calm, 2km-wide (1.2 miles) Zambezi River spills out of a flat basalt lip and plunges into the gorge below. At their highest, the Victoria Falls drop a distance of 108m (345ft), almost twice as far as the Niagara Falls.

Situated in the northwest of the country on the Zambian border, Lake Kariba covers 7,770 sq km (3,000 sq miles) and holds a million gallons of water. Game can be viewed from the comfort of various safari camps, or from well-appointed cruise vessels and self-contained safari-crafts.

Coolest beach cottages in South Africa

Amidst South Africa's natural wonders are a series of beaches with striking turquoise waters and sparkling white sandy shores. The beaches span 4 distinct areas, each with its own personality.

1.The Beach Hut
Paternoster, Cape West Coast
This is exactly the kind of white-washed and nautical-themed spot that springs to mind when you think of a waterfront holiday. The shore itself isn’t the barefoot- friendly type – broken mussel shells make up the bulk of the sand – but that shouldn’t stop you from going for a swim.

2.Sea Scape
Langebaan, Cape West Coast
Solid wood tables, a chaise longue, rich leather couches and stainless steel and marble nishes replace the thatch roofs, wicker chairs, shells and driftwood so typical of beach cottages. It’s a double-storey mansion within a few metres of the sand and calm turquoise waters of Langebaan Lagoon.

3.West of the Moon
Churchhaven, Cape West Coast
The whitewashed, rustic beach feel with weathered furniture alongside modern finishes can so easily become clichéd, but West of the Moon in West Coast National Park has the authentic vintage look down pat. There’s nothing modern about the place – everything from the brass light switches and old-fashioned furniture to a blue kettle and kitsch containers is dated and rather delightful.

4.The Lighthouse
Yzerfontein, Cape West Coast
The ‘no shoes’ sign at the front door sets the tone for the clean, white interior of this laid-back retreat. Although it’s really big, the wooden floors, worn cupboards, picture frames and an old turquoise display cabinet give it a sense of cosiness. When the wind’s howling and the deck loungers won’t do, the large fireplace is the heart of the home. Whip up hot chocolate in the open-plan kitchen, put your feet up, set your mug on the eccentric coffee table, and take in the salty air and foamy shore.

5.High Rocks Beach House
Umkomaas, KZN South Coast
Very few places offer the feel of a luxury coastal holiday at the price of a budget break, but this converted fisherman’s hut on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast pulls it off in style. Screed floors, high ceilings, Nguni rugs, abstract art, leather headboards, ornate lamps and bright paintings add glamour to the otherwise stark white sea-facing suites and the four-bunk and double rooms that open onto a big lawn.

Beautiful Location to Enjoy the Sunset

Surrounded by rolling hills, the Gaborone Dam is an ideal spot in which to relax and admire the wonderful sunsets over this man-made lake, which is also a focus for much of the city’s waterborne fun and activities.

Although it was built to provide the nation’s capital with a reliable water supply, the dam also provides a recreational area for many local water sports clubs. It is also the largest man-made body of water in Botswana. With its fine location on the Notwane River, the area has great potential for tourism and there are plans to make it even more attractive.

Activities at the Dam

Yacht club

The club is popular with yachtsmen and guests who can enjoy the open-air bar, swimming pool and a restaurant serving good food.

Driving force

There is a series of races throughout the year including the Gaborone Yacht Club Spring Regatta, which takes place in August – generally the windiest month of the year – and the Botswana National Sailing Championships in October. This has become popular with sailors from South Africa and attracts more than 30 boats each year. The club is also a driving force in promoting youth sailing in Botswana and ensuring that the country is well represented in international sailing events around the world.

Also Popular For

The dam is popular, too, with birders, anglers and windsurfers. Swimming is not recommended because of crocodiles and the possibility of contracting schistosomiasis. The shores of the lake are home to many other clubs and recreational areas. The Waterfront, an entertainment venue, is located on the north bank, while the south bank is home to the Kalahari Fishing Club, for members only, as well as a public facility called City Scapes offering picnic sites, a boat jetty and a children’s playground.
