VREDEFORT DOME - ESSENCE OF A LAND

The Vredefort Structure can be considered to be a gigantic scar that was left behind when a huge meteor (estimated size 10km diameter) collided with the earth about 2023 million years ago. The impact site, in modern day terms, would be some odd tens of kilometres south of Parys.  The collision, at an estimated speed of 150 000 k/h, took place on an ancient surface about 17 km higher than the mentioned modern-day target point. The reason for this was that at the time 17 km of layered sedimentary and volcanic formations were piled up upon what, in today’s terms, we refer to as the Parys granite. Although a crater with an estimated diameter in the order of 100 km and some odd tens of kilometres deep was formed on the ancient surface, it was destroyed by erosion over a period of millions of years.

Accommodation

In the seclusion of the south-western core of the Vredefort Dome, about 20 km from Parys and 14 km from Vredefort, you will find the farm Deelfontein nestled between the high, concentric ridges of South Africa’s youngest World Heritage Site. It is the near-pristine environment, the interesting geology of this oldest and largest meteorite impact site, as well as numerous remains of the stone- and iron age inhabitants, the Boer War, and the early gold mining activities, that makes the Dome such a prime tourist destination.  

Two comfortable farm houses, and a bush camp for those who want to escape from civilisation, offer accommodation at Deelfontein. The guest houses lie about 300 m apart, and the bush camp is situated 1 km away, ensuring privacy. The two houses and camp are also ideally suited to large groups. Up to 46 persons in total may be accommodated on the farm.

 Mountain Bike Trail offers anything from easy rides to extreme technical single track trails, exploring the mountain tops.

SARILI LODGE GAME VIEWING AND ACTIVITIES

Shamwari Game Reserve is a big five, private game reserve and consists of 20 000 hectares (49000 acres) of malaria free, prime African bushland. Shamwari has received numerous international awards, including the World's Leading Conservation Company and Game Reserve for five consecutive years. The reserve boasts five eco-systems, thus enabling the support of many forms of plant, animal and bird life. Activities include early morning and late afternoon game drives as well as guided bush walks. All game activities are accompanied by experienced and knowledgeable guides. Want to take a break from cold weather and short days in the northern hemisphere? Consider a safari adventure to Botswana.

Wildlife is certainly Africa's biggest attraction for visitors. It makes up a large part of many of our safaris and adventures. Adventure Hiking

Hiking in South Africa

There's no better way to experience wild places than to put your boots on and your feet on the ground, one in front of the other. South Africa has a huge variety of awesomely scenic hiking trails. Here are some of the highlights.

The Otter Trail 

Along the Tsitsikamma coast is probably the most popular hike in the country. Lush forests, rugged shorelines, mountain streams and waterfalls and fragrant fynbos make this a special one. It's strenuous, with lots of ups and downs, but the distances aren't too great.

 The Dolphin Trail 

It traverses similar terrain to the Otter – joining up with it in places – but instead of hiking huts you stay in fully catered guest houses with great views and good food. Your pack is transported to your next overnight spot by vehicle, and you carry only a day pack with lunch, water, camera and swimsuit.

The Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape offers similar trails but dramatically different scenery: miles of deserted beaches, wave-lashed rocks and occasional tropical forest.

Accommodation is in coastal hotels instead of huts. The usual is to carry your pack, but you can arrange to have it driven around, if you plan ahead.

Purists can tackle the Wild Coast rough as they like. There are miles and miles of unspoiled hiking trail traversing high mountains, deserts and forests, where the accommodation is the usual hiking hut, and the cuisine whatever you decided to carry.

For an even wilder experience, you can hike for days in the Cedarberg, near Cape Town, or the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal, without seeing a hut or a route marker. These are designated wilderness areas, and you simply take a map and a permit and set off, sleeping under the stars or in convenient caves.

There are many others, some of which are on private land. You can get a reasonable idea of what's available from the Footprint Hiking Club.

Of course, the most important aspect of a hiking trail is that you don't constantly bump into other people. And the only way to ensure that is to limit numbers, so that means you have to book.
